Dr Simran Mangat is an eye surgeon specialising in cataract surgery, oculoplastic and lacrimal surgery. After medical school at the University of Birmingham (UK), Simran undertook ophthalmic training along with advanced subspecialty training in oculoplastic and lacrimal surgery.

He has practiced ophthalmology in Hobart since 2016 with a particular emphasis on cataract and oculoplastic surgery. In addition, he is proficient in general ophthalmology including the use of intravitreal injections for management of age-related macular degeneration and diabetic macular oedema.

He enjoys auditing his outcomes and presenting them at peer group meetings. Recent audits presented in Hobart include outcomes of cataract surgery along with the iStent for glaucoma and the outcomes of extended depth of focus intraocular lenses in cataract surgery. He also has presented on techniques in oculoplastic surgery.

He is a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, the Australian Society of Ophthalmologists and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London.

Simran enjoys his family time, seeing his daughter grow up in Hobart and being busy with school and extracurricular activities. Simran and his wife Sonia love playing tennis and attending tennis tournaments. He and his family like to tour around Tasmania and further afield, playing golf , sampling different cuisines and drinking great coffee!

Dr Richard Sheard is a retinal specialist, cataract surgeon and general ophthalmologist with over 15 years of experience.

Richard is a graduate of Cambridge University (UK) and undertook ophthalmic and specialist vitreoretinal training at the prestigious Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. Having moved to Hobart in 2016, he is currently the most experienced retinal surgeon in the city. Richard treats the full range of retinal problems including epiretinal membrane, macular hole, diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, retinal vascular disease, retinal detachment and eye injuries. Richard has extensive experience managing the full range of general eye disorders.

Richard audits his outcomes for cataract and retinal surgery which show low complication rates and above-average outcomes. He was previously responsible for quality and safety at Sheffield Teaching Hospital (UK), which performed up to 5000 cataract operations per year, with demonstrated improvements in patient outcomes and safety profile under his leadership.

Richard’s patients report high levels of satisfaction with his level of care, and he is passionate about providing each patient with the best possible experience and the optimal outcome for their personal circumstances.

Richard is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK). He is a member the Australian and New Zealand Society of Retinal Specialists, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Australian Medical Association.

In his personal time Richard enjoys being close to family and making the most of the mild climate and beautiful countryside. He enjoys exploring, bushwalking, tinkering with old cars, house renovations and running the family hobby-farm (or playing on the tractor!)

Dr David McKay is an ophthalmic surgeon with special interest in medical and surgical retinal diseases. Originally born in Hobart he has spent much of his life in NSW. After completing his medical degree at the University of NSW in 1982, he underwent ophthalmic training at the Sydney Eye Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. His vitreoretinal fellowship was done at the Lions’ Eye Institute in Perth. He had a traveling scholarship and spent six months in the USA. He has worked in Sydney for many years in his own private practice in Macquarie Street, as well as being an associate at several other major metropolitan and rural practices. David was an ophthalmic surgeon for 20 years at Concord Repatriation General Hospital, teaching residents and registrars, and was Head of Department. He was also a surgeon at the NSW Eye Centre at the Sydney Private Hospital and Hunters Hill Hospital. He spent the last 10 years working as an eye surgeon at the Launceston Eye Institute before relocating to Hobart in 2026.

David has commenced work as a vitreoretinal and cataract specialist at Derwent Eye Specialists. Interests include surgery for macular holes, epiretinal membranes, diabetic retinopathy, detached retinas, as well as intravitreal injections for macular degeneration, diabetic macular oedema and vein occlusions. He has presented workshops and papers at various national and state meetings concerning ophthalmology, and participated in many aspects of the Royal Australian & New Zealand (NZ) College of Ophthalmologists, of which he is a fellow (since 1988). He is a member of the Australian & NZ Society of Retinal Specialists, and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. David has been a registered medical practitioner since 1982. He contributes regularly to teaching and training sessions for medical students, trainee eye surgeons, nursing staff, ophthalmic technicians and optometrists.

David has previously been a commissioned officer in the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps, with the rank of Lt Colonel. David is married to Andrea who is a dermatologist. Together they have two grown children. He is a keen sailor, holding the qualification of Yachtmaster Offshore in the Royal Yachting Association, UK. He has sailed his own boat around the world. David’s other passions include cycling, mountaineering, and hiking.
